Microsoft Surface (Codename: Milan), is a forthcoming Multi-touch product from Microsoft which is developed as a software and hardware combination technology that allows a user, or multiple users, to manipulate digital content by the use of natural motions, hand gestures, or physical objects. It was announced on May 29, 2007 at D5 conference, and is expected to be released by commercial partners in spring 2008. Initial customers will be in the hospitality businesses, such as restaurants, hotels, retail, public entertainment venues and the military for tactical overviews.

Bill Buxton did research on this at University of Toronto back in 1984. He’s now leading this project at Microsoft. Way to go R&D at Microsoft. Except… when are we going to see product? Wasn’t it supposed to ship at end of 2007? How hard could it be to make a product out of it after years of research? We’ll see when this thing hits the market as a product & if it catches on. It would be interesting to see if MS will be the exclusive hw maker for it or if they will set up a reference design for other manufacturers. Remember, they did start a lot of hw initiatives that amounted to very little. Tablet PC, UMPC, Windows Mobile, Origami, etc. The only exception is X-Box, but thats been billions of dollars loosing venture propped up by profits from Windows/Office/Enterprise.
